The Abruzzo wine region is located on the eastern Adriatic coast of central Italy, just south of the Marche and north of Molise. Although there is a smattering of white and rosé produced here, the region is most famous for Montepulciano. After Sangiovese, Montepulciano is the second most planted grape in Italy, and it's widely loved and consumed in cantinas and cafes throughout the country.

We tend to focus on the small, independent domains and estates when searching out new wines for the shop; however, big isn't always bad, so we don't immediately dismiss well-managed cooperatives and, occasionally, some of the bigger companies. Savin Bio-Postumia Vini is a perfect example of a large winemaking enterprise that does things the right way.

Savin Bio-Postumia Vini is based in the Veneto; however, they source fruit and make wines in a significant variety of Italy's wine regions. It starts to get interesting when you discover that the company was established in 1925 and continues to be owned and operated by the Savin family. Even more interesting is the Savin family's dedication to organic farming methodology and clean winemaking techniques. Their conversion to organic farming began in the late 1990s, and today, all of their property is certified Bio.

It's no accident that Montepulciano became a staple in red-checker table cloth restaurants all over the globe. It may be the ultimate pasta pizza red; however, it really goes with just about anything.

In your glass, you'll find a lot of wine for such a low price! Earthy red berry and cherry aromas greet you leading to a plush and plummy palate of dark red fruits. The finish is clean and soft, with just enough tannin and freshness to maintain a lovely balance to the fruit.Bar

Barbarossa Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is an easy-drinking style of Montepulciano and will be right at home with all of your red sauce dishes. It will also pair beautifully with grilled chicken, chops, and lighter cuts of beef from the grill. It's an incredibly food-friendly red; however, it is the perfect one to bust out when friends pop over to hang out on the patio or deck.
