The Macôn is one of my favorite places to hunt for Chardonnay, and I tend to buy as much as I can from this region for the shop. I believe the Macôn offers Burgundy lovers an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy world-class Chardonnay at wallet-friendly prices.

The most famous Chardonnay from this region is Pouilly-Fuissé, produced in the area surrounding the two Macônnais villages of Pouilly and Fuissé. There are other village designated wines named for their vineyard locations such as Mâcon-Chaintré, Mâcon-Fuissé, Mâcon-Vinzelles, Mâcon-Charnay, Saint-Véran, and Pouilly-Vinzelles. Wines labeled Mâcon-Villages are regional wines from a broad area of the Mâcon and are typically blended from several village sites throughout the entire region.

Clos Noly is the second label of Domaine Manciat-Poncet and named after the estate's oldest vineyard. The Domaine is based in Chaintré and is owned and managed by the jubilant Marie-Pierre Manciat, representing the fifth generation of vignerons in her family.

Marie-Pierre owns twenty-three hectares spread out across five villages. And each vineyard is meticulously managed with the utmost focus on producing perfect fruit. The estate practices sustainable viticulture with yields that are routinely twenty to thirty percent lower than what is allowed in each given appellation. This enables Marie-Pierre to craft wines rich, powerful, and focused, emphasizing the calcaire rich soils of each terroir. Her wines consistently represent excellent value and quality.

Pouilly-Vinzelles "Les Longeays" 2018 is sourced from the smallest appellation owned by the estate. (0.3 hectare). It borders on the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, and the similarities to its pricier neighbor are immediately recognizable.

Marie-Pierre ferments "Les Longeays" in used, neutral 228-liter barrels to add lush texture and mouth-feel without adding any oak aging flavor -- no new oak is used. The result is a wine with exceptional depth and character, showcasing the appellation. The nose screams calcaire-limestone and is framed by yellow stone fruits leading to a dense and focused palate. It's a perfect balance of fruit and mineral elements all through the finish. A tremendous overachiever!
