Pasta-Pizza reds are a dime a dozen, so we tend to take notice when we run across a real standout that's also a great value. When we recently tasted the Alberto Conti Montepulciano d'Abruzzo with my friend importer Craig Baker, we knew we had a winner on our hands, and I placed an order on the spot!
Alberto Conti is sourced from each of the four wine-producing provinces of Abruzzo: Chieti, Pescara, Teramo, and L'Aquila. The fertile southern province of Chieti contributes density and volume of fruit, while the northern regions of Pescara and Teramo contribute lift and minerality.
If you're a fan of the Alberto Conti Toscana, you'll love their Montepulciano. It's made in the same soft and generous style and features a nice balance of fruit and earth.
In your glass, it's all about nicely lifted, earthy, cherry fruit. It's towards the medium body as Montepulciano goes so that you can enjoy this with pasta, pizza, chops, burgers, and it will also sneak by with grilled firm-fleshed fish like tuna and salmon. It's just an excellent all-around red to have on hand for the porch, patio, pizza, and pasta!
