The Ardèche is one of my favorite places in the South of France to search for top-quality, reasonably priced, off-the-radar gems. It reminds me of the Languedoc fifteen or twenty years ago, jam-packed with great wine and just waiting to be discovered. Like the Languedoc, I can't imagine this region staying off the radar for too much longer.
You'll find the Ardèche is a little more than an hour's drive from the Mediterranean coast. This close proximity provides mild winters, long, hot summers, and the cooling influence of Mistral, the cold, northwesterly wind that persists through the region. The area is home to Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, and Viognier; however, close to 50% of the region is planted with Chardonnay.
The Dorthe family owns and runs Domaine de Couron, located in the tiny village of Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche. Jean-Luc and Marie-Lise Dorthe are the ninth generation of vignerons to manage the family estate. The property is lovingly and sustainably farmed with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery. The area is dripping in history, and the family frequently finds historical artifacts dating back to Roman times.
This pink pleaser opens with aromas of red raspberry, strawberry, and watermelon in your glass, leading to a palate of fresh red berries framed by spicy citrus. There's ample richness to balance the zesty acidity, making this perfect for almost any summer cuisine. We particularly loved this with Indian curry, and I have to say it handled the heat very nicely. It's also a no-brainer for those balmy summer evenings at the pool or on the porch.
