The vineyards in and around the village of Saumur in the Loire Valley are one of the best places on the planet to grow Chenin Blanc. Saumur also happens to be well-known in the mountains of Western North Carolina -- it's Asheville's Sister City in France.

The Saumur AOC extends across 1400 hectares through 9 communes of Vienne, including Domaine Saint Landor. The clay-limestone subsoil, white tufa soils, and a temperate micro-climate create perfect conditions for world-class Chenin.

Domaine Saint Landor began in 2007 when Jean François Georget transitioned from selling fruit to local vignerons to making wine at the Domaine. Over the years, sons Thomas and Antoine and Thomas' wife Maude joined to make the Domaine truly a family affair.

The Domaine is fortunate to have 23 hectares of prime vineyard holdings in some of the Loire's most prestigious terroirs. They have worked for the last several years to transition fully to organic farming and winemaking, and they received their official BIO certification from the EU last year.

Domaine Saint Landon Saumur Blanc is made with 100% Chenin Blanc and is a dry, crisp, mineral-driven, unoaked expression of the grape. Think Chablis meets Sancerre, and you're getting the picture. In your glass, you'll note aromas of yellow apple, quince, and subtle floral notes on the nose, leading to a plate of orchard fruits framed by a zesty edge of citrus. The zip and minerality are in center stage, keeping the ripe fruit in perfect balance.

Hammond and I love this style of dry Loire Chenin with all of our summer poultry and pork dishes, and we also love it as a refreshing casual sipper on a balmy summer evening.
