2020 was a difficult year for Sauvignon Blanc growers in both France and New Zealand. While the Loire Valley in France regularly contends with frost and hail issues, the Marlborough region of New Zealand generally rides through each vintage unscathed with little or no weather concerns. Unfortunately, the Marlborough failed to dodge that bullet with the 2020 vintage. A series of severe spring frosts coupled with a drought-riddled harvest season resulted in a 30-40% reduction in the vintage. The 2020 vintage will be in short supply; however, the good news is that it's a vintage of terrific overall quality.
Elmstone Sauvignon Blanc comes to us from the same folk who make The Horologist. Like The Horologist, it's sourced from the Marlborough; however, it comes from vineyards located in cooler pockets at a higher elevation. It has the round richness of The Horologist; however, it's a touch more focused, leaning more towards citrus than gooseberry.
In your glass, after a quick swirl, you'll note classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc aromas of grapefruit and green herbs, leading to a fresh, clean palate of ruby grapefruit and citrus. A nice framing of minerality persists through the clean, brisk middle palate, finishing with a good balance of richness and mouthwatering acidity. This is truly a wine of summer!
