La Quercia owner and winemaker Antonio Lamona is described as a "true-blue, grizzled farmer-type. In other words, he's a farmer who just happens to make great wine.
Antonio was the first in a long line of winemakers in the family to bottle wine with their own name. Since the late 1960s, he's been a vehement practioner of sustainable and organic farming practices and says, "I would rather forgo an entire vintage than put man-made pesticides in my soul." In addition to his careful attention in the winery, his estate is entirely self-sufficient, producing all of their fruits, vegetables, breads, salamis, and meats on the property.
The 2019 La Quercia Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is sourced from vineyards located three kilometers uphill from the Adriatic Sea and a short drive from the majestic peak of Gran Sasso. It's a perfect location for vines and the benefit of cool maritime breezes from the Adriatic temper the climate all through the growing season.
We recently tasted the new vintage, and we're blown away by the overall quality of this release. There's a beautiful gloss on the fruit, with gorgeous notes of plum, dark raspberry, and cherry framed by an edge of herbs and spice. Of course, this is an outstanding pasta-pizza red; however, we'll be loving it with burgers, chops, sausage, and peppers, and pork tenderloin.
