Bodegas Valhermoso is a perfect example of the kind of property and producer I look for during my buying trips to Europe. The Bodegas is way off the beaten path -- literally out in the middle of nowhere — and without the glitzy, glamourous building like most of the famous names in the region.
Instead, the focus here is on quality, tradition, and integrity. During my last trip to Spain, I enjoyed spending some time with the owner David Aguado, a man who is laser-focused on blending that tradition and integrity with cutting-edge modern equipment and technology.
The Aguado family have been wine-growers in Rueda since the 1920s. Until recently, the family sold the harvest from their 150-acre vineyards in bulk lots to neighboring wineries. Their grapes always found their way into all of the region's most famous and highly regarded bottlings. In 2011 David Aguado changed all of that when he established the family's first winery.
David is yet another engineer turned winemaker who grew up in a family with a rich and deep history in winemaking. For David, this unique combination created a foundation in tradition that's perfectly complemented by his engineering experience.
In the glass, this super-fresh white starts with lovely herbaceous notes wrapping around aromas of apricot and citrus. Extra aging on the lees provides a nice toasty hint on the palate along with flavors of citrus and pineapple. It's a fresh and zippy style of Verdejo, perfect for seafood and poultry. Hammond and I had a glass recently with some North Carolina Speckled Sea Trout, and we can enthusiastically recommend that pairing!
