The wines of Mont Gravet have enjoyed a spot on AWM shelves for more than ten years. Besides being a fantastic value, I've always appreciated how well they represent their regional terroir.
Eagle-eye AWM customers may notice something a little different about this year's bottling. Previous vintages have been 100% Carignan, while this year's release is a GSM -- a classic blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. I'm happy to report that it's every bit as good as previous vintages and even has more depth and complexity.
The name Mont Gravet refers to the unique Languedoc terroir where the Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre are sourced. Grapes grown here benefit from the bright sun on the south-facing gentle hills known as "Mont," while mists from the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south provide gentle cooling breezes.
The vineyards feature clay soils topped with a layer of round stones known in this region as Gravet. The Gravet helps retain heat in the cool evenings, and the hard clay soil forces the roots to travel deep into the earth in search of water, adding to the wine's complexity.
In your glass, you're greeted by aromas of dark berry, cherry, and plum, framed by hints of earthy spice and vanilla. The silky-smooth palate is redolent of red cherry and raspberry and finishes super clean and fresh with a touch of vanilla and red licorice.
This easy-going, quaffable red is a no-brainer as a house wine. It's perfect in the glass on its own; however, it will pair with a wide variety of lighter foods and snacks.
