AWM regulars know all about Tuesday Night Wines -- the phrase I coined years ago describes a wine of value, quality, and most importantly, pure pleasure in the glass. It's the bottle you reach for on a Tuesday night with a turkey burger, bowl of pasta, or the roast leftover from the weekend -- you get the picture. It's a wine meant to be easy and uncomplicated -- honest enjoyment in the glass.
The South of France and the Southern Rhône Valley, in particular, are home to a treasure-trove of great wines from famous villages -- Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Rasteau, Lirac, Cairanne, to name a few. In addition to these blue-chip locations, there's an ocean of outstanding every-day wines produced under the more broad-based label of Côtes du Rhône. More often than not, this is where I begin my hunt in France for Tuesday Night Wines. Fortunately for us, my good friend Jean-Christian Rostagni also hunts down some of these great bargains, and La Source du Clos is one of his latest finds!
La Source du Clos is a super-smooth, classic Rhône blend of Grenache and Syrah. There isn't even a hint of a rough edge on this wine; it's all about silky-smooth, dark red fruits. It's a remarkably food-friendly red that doubles nicely as a porch sipper.
