With summer just around the corner, it's time to fire up the grill, pop on your favorite steak, and pull the cork on a bottle of Bordeaux -- it's a classic food and wine pairing that's one of life's greatest pleasures! Every time we explore this pairing, it reminds me that Bordeaux a great wine to enjoy all year!

Château Tour Saint-Christophe is located in the commune of Saint Christophe des Bardes, just east of the village of St. Émilion. The estate's vineyards are planted in tight rows on narrow landscaped terraces, a feature quite distinct and rare in St. Émilion. The terroir of this property is absolutely perfect, and the combination of south-southwestern exposure, excellent drainage conditions, and the clay-topped limestone soil spell Bordeaux perfection.

I tend to gravitate to the "in-between" vintages when pulling the cork on a Bordeaux for summer enjoyment. I find the "in-between" vintages to be a little less extracted and less structured than the vintages heralded as "blockbuster." Flanked by the 2016 and 2018 vintages, the "in-between" 2017 Tour St-Christophe is beautifully balanced and classic Bordeaux; however, it's not as extracted or powerful as the surrounding vintages. For me, that's what makes it perfect for enjoying with our summer grilling adventures.

95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com: "
From a picturesque vineyard on the east side of Saint-Emilion, not far from Chateau Barde-Haut the 2017 Chateau Tour Saint Christophe checks in as a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. This inky purple-hued beauty boasts stunning notes of blue fruits, crushed rocks, violets, and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and with remarkable purity as well as finesse in its tannins, this is another remarkable wine from this estate, which has been turning out brilliant wines in every vintage now. Don't miss it. Tasted twice." 2/20

93+ Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous:
"The 2017 Tour Saint Christophe is a dense, richly constituted wine loaded with tremendous energy and pure power. It is also a bit shut down; so I would prefer to give it a few years in bottle to be at its best. Black fruit, chocolate, leather, licorice and spice build into the potent, virile finish. This is a wine with tremendous promise." 3/20

93 Points, James Suckling, jamesuckling.com:
"A spicy, fresh and intense red on the nose with chocolate. Medium to full body and very fine tannins that give a creamy texture. Juicy and long. A blend of 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Want to drink it now, but better after 2022." 1/20

92+ Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Tour Saint-Christophe (blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) charges out of the glass with bold notions of dried mulberries, fruitcake and baked plums plus hints of tobacco, iron ore and tilled soil. Full-bodied, the palate is undeniably rich and opulent, yet the freshness injects vibrance and a sense of decorum, supported by plush tannins, finishing on a compelling mineral note. The alcohol here is knocking on 15%, but you wouldn't know it. (Psst, considering this is well over the 14% USA tariff threshold, this should find lots of takers in the States!) Rating: 92+ 5/20

92 Points, Neal Martin, Vinous:
"The 2017 Tour Saint Christophe has a well defined bouquet with black truffle tinged black fruit with hints of cassis surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very lithe in the mouth, not the most complex Tour Saint Christophe that I have tasted in recent years, but I appreciate the saline finish. Very fine.
