Located in northeastern Spain's dry, dusty landscape, the Aragón wine region is home to an impressive number of Denominaciones de Origen (DOs), offering a textbook snapshot of Spanish winemaking. From the rugged Pyrenean foothills to the sun-scorched southern plains, Aragón's varied terroir provides a striking, albeit punishing, place to practice viticulture.
The continental climate in Aragón, with its blazingly hot summers, cool, crisp nights, and minuscule rainfall, provides ideal conditions for big-bruiser red varietals like Garnacha and Syrah. The mosaic of limestone, clay, gravel, and slate soils beautifully stamps the region's signature terroir onto these full-bodied reds. Much like the Mistral in southern France, Aragón's persistent winds—especially the Cierzo — are the final piece of the viticultural puzzle, keeping vineyards cool during the unforgiving heat of summer.
Founded in 1984, Bodegas Aragonesas is a relatively recent addition to the region's viticultural scene. The winery was established by a group of local growers who recognized the extraordinary potential of the region's old vine Garnacha, especially from vineyards in Campo de Borja.
At Bodegas Aragonesas, a deep commitment to Garnacha, a grape long-cultivated in the area, is the foundation of their philosophy. The winery carefully tends to some of the oldest Garnacha vineyards in Campo de Borja. Some of the estate's vineyard holdings are close to 100 years old, and while the yields may be tiny, the grapes are massive in flavor.
Los Dos Grenache Syrah is a terrific, best-buy red wine Bodegas Aragonesas makes for export, and it's a favorite we've featured many times over the years at the AWM. In your glass, you're greeted with vibrant aromas of ripe dark cherry and raspberry, framed by subtle floral notes and a gentle whisper of spice. You'll love the layers of juicy dark berries and hints of red licorice undertones all through the middle palate, finishing with the peppery warmth of the Syrah.
This versatile red will pair like a dream with classic hearty dishes like roast lamb and grilled steak. Spicy chorizo blends beautifully with the wine's fruit-forward flavors and silky texture. We love traditional Aragonese fare, such as Migas (seasoned breadcrumbs with chorizo) or Ternasco de Aragón ( the region's signature roast lamb) for an authentic regionally inspired pairing.
If you're feeling adventurous, try it alongside grilled pork or chicken in sweet-and-savory sauces or mildly spiced Indian curries. Los Dos stands up like a champ to these unconventional pairings. Whether you stick to Spanish classics, venture into global cuisine, or dream up your own "out of the box" food creations, Los Dos is a splendid choice!
