For Hammond and me, keeping a liter or two of Grüner in the larder is essential for the hot summer months. We love Grüner all throughout the year; however, I'd have to say, along with Muscadet, it's one of our favorite crisp summer whites.

Weingut Joseph Bauer is located in the rolling hills of Austria's Wagram region. The estate enjoys the perfect intersection of the cool northerly winds of the Alps and the warmer breezes from the Pannonian Plains in the southeast. The meeting of these winds produces the classic diurnal shift of hot, dry days and cool breezy nights -- a climate perfect for viticulture.

Current owner and winemaker Joseph Bauer took over the management of the family estate in 2001, and in 2011, the property was certified organic. While the family is famous mainly for their Grüner Veltliner, they are among a small group of local vignerons who have helped rescue Roter Veltliner from extinction.

This year's Bauer Grüner Veltliner is a stunner! It's richer and rounder than previous bottlings, yet it still retains marvelous lift and verve. In your glass you can expect a gorgeous melange of honeyed citrus, white peach, and some classic hints of white pepper.

Pair this gorgeous Grüner with chicken, pork, white-fleshed fish, vegetarian and vegan dishes, and your favorite summer salads. Grüner is an especially great wine to pair with fresh summer vegetables.
