Hammond and I are huge fans of White Bordeaux. We're especially fond of the old-school style that features Semillon as the primary player in the Cuvée, and this one is a winner!

Vignobles Dulon is a prime example of the ever-evolving landscape of winemaking in Bordeaux, notably on the somewhat lesser-known Right Bank. The Dulon family's roots have been deeply entrenched in the Right Bank's winemaking heritage, beginning with the family's first vineyard purchases in the early 1700s.

Fast forward to today, and millennial sisters Carole and Sophie Dulon have introduced stalwart changes to the family property, eschewing many of the region's strictly traditionalist practices. The sisters are redefining the rules in a region historically dominated mainly by patriarchal norms. While their approach continues to exude respect for their family's vinous legacy, they're on a mission to introduce innovative techniques that embrace a modern perspective. The sisters are helping to define new standards in a prestigious wine region noted for its fierce resistance to change.

Carole and Sophie's influence is evident in their management of Château Grand Jean, a property that's been in the Dulon family for generations. The Château, located in the verdant, gently rolling hills of Bordeaux's right bank, is undoubtedly a symbol of the family's past; however, it's also a modern canvas for the sisters' bright winemaking future. The Château's picturesque vineyards and traditional-looking yet modern winery reflect the sisters' philosophy of blending time-honored with cutting-edge.

Grand Jean Bordeaux Blanc is a superbly crafted White Bordeaux that stands out in a region predominantly known for its reds. The cuvée, made from 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc, is a daring departure from today's typical Bordeaux Blanc, which usually leans heavily, if not entirely, towards Sauvignon Blanc. In choosing to blend Grand Jean Blanc more towards Semillon, Carole and Sophie have given a firm nod to tradition while also bucking modern trends, as Semillon, once the predominant player in Bordeaux blends, has seen significantly diminished use in modern times.

Grand Jean Bordeaux Blanc presents a wonderfully layered experience in your glass, thanks to its unique blend. You're greeted by a melange of floral notes, hinting at Semillon's delicate yet complex nature, complemented by the zippy, vibrant character of Sauvignon Blanc. This classic time-honored Cuvéeis a delightful dance between Semillon's rich, honeyed textures and the crisp, lifted freshness of Sauvignon Blanc.

Grand Jean Bordeaux Blanc Semillon-centric blend offers a fantastic opportunity to explore a wealth of classic culinary combinations. This classic Bordeaux Blanc pairs exceptionally well with seafood, particularly shellfish like oysters and scallops. The wine's rich texture complements the sweet succulence of shellfish, while its brightness provides a clean cut through the richness.

Hammond and I have always loved Semillon-heavy White Bordeaux with poultry dishes, and the Grand Jean Bordeaux would be a perfect choice. The wine's full-bodied nature stands up very nicely to the flavors of roasted or grilled chicken. Grand Jean would also pair beautifully with wine meat preparations -- grilled or pan-seared pork chops would be marvelous.
