For most wine lovers, Bordeaux immediately conjures up images of robust, steak-and-cellar-worthy reds; however, the region's white wines are quietly spectacular. Almost always overshadowed by their ruby-hued counterparts, white Bordeaux, especially from independent vignerons on the Right Bank, represent some of the most compelling values in French wine today.

White Bordeaux is primarily blend-driven, with the marriage of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon creating a beautifully balanced white. Sauvignon Blanc brings vibrant acidity, fresh citrus notes, and herbal nuances, forming the lively backbone of these wines. Sémillon cozies up to its brighter brother by adding a smoothing texture, richness, and a subtle roundness that allows for extended bottle aging.

The two grape varieties blend very effectively, and each enhances the best qualities of the other—Sémillon's broader, honeyed tones perfectly temper Sauvignon Blanc's zesty freshness. Depending on the balance of the blend, resulting wines can range from the fresh and zippy to the rich, smooth, and round. Occasional touches of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris can also find their way into the cuvée, adding delicate floral aromatics and extra layers of complexity.

Nestled in the southernmost tip of Bordeaux's Right Bank, Château des Antonins is steeped in centuries of history and tradition. Currently owned by Geoffroy and Martine de Roquefeuil, the estate traces its origins back to the 13th century, when it served as a monastery for the monks of the Order of Saint Antoine. The surrounding village of Pondaurat bears its own historical significance, having once welcomed pilgrims journeying along the Camino de Santiago.

Couvent de Pondaurat White Bordeaux is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon that leans decidedly towards the Sauvignon Blanc camp. The Sauvignon Blanc provides lively lift and citrus-driven brightness, while the Sémillon rounds out the texture, adding a silky mouthfeel and rich complexity.

In your glass, this classic White Bordeaux is brimming with personality. A quick swirl or two will unlock aromas of bright lemony citrus before downshifting into Sémillon's tropical territory of pineapple and passionfruit. Hints of fresh basil and lemongrass keep the fruit in check through a textured finish that's kissed with a whisper of salinity.

For a true Bordeaux experience, pair this tasty White Bordeaux with oysters on the half shell, classic sole meunière, or a simple goat cheese tart. For a Paris Bistro vibe, duck rillettes, a warm leek and potato tart, or a simple grilled fish with beurre blanc. If you'd prefer an international detour, enjoy it with Korean seafood and green onion pancakes (Haemul Pajeon), Peruvian ceviche, or a Middle Eastern mezze platter.
