Over the years, personally and here at AWM, I've developed a deep-rooted connection with the wines of Bordeaux. Something especially intriguing about the region continually draws me in, and I'm perpetually on the hunt for new producers.
My journey with Bordeaux began in the late 1970s when I purchased my very first full case — a Right Bank Bordeaux from the 1978 vintage. Little did I know that purchase would spark a lifelong love affair with the wines from this remarkable region. It's amazing how one moment can set the course for a passion that literally lasts a lifetime.
Hammond and I love to crack a bottle of Bordeaux any time of the year; however, there's a particular allure to enjoying them during the transitional seasons. As the weather shifts, Bordeaux complements the changing moods and flavors of the season in a way that few other wines can match (of course, I would also include Beaujolais on this list). They offer warmth on a cool evening and a rejuvenating vibe as the days begin to warm.
I'm excited to announce that our holiday supply of AWM Handpicked Bordeaux has just arrived. I'll feature these selections in upcoming newsletters.
Among the new arrivals, Château Roc De Ségur stands out in particular for quality at an incredible value. Situated in Landerrouet-sur-Ségur, a charming village at the eastern edge of the Entre-Deux-Mers, the estate sports a spectacular view of the Ségur valley. The name "Ségur" comes from the old French "Ségure," meaning "well-defended," a nod to the area's historical fortifications dating back to when Aquitaine was under English rule during the Hundred Years' War.
In 1992, Daniel and Gisèle Vidal embarked on their vinous journey at Château Roc De Ségur. Starting with just one hectare, they've expanded the estate to over 68 hectares across seven villages. Their son Florian joined them eight years ago, and together, they've balanced a combination of traditional and modern to build an impressive winery that's literally carved into the rock of an old quarry. The stones from this area were used in the 18th century to build the magnificent city of Bordeaux, leaving behind quarries that now provide perfect lodging for wine.
Château Roc De Ségur is the estate's entry-level bottling and is crafted from a classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. In your glass, Château Roc De Ségur greets you with inviting aromas of earth and fruit, notably cassis and black cherry. The tannins are very ripe and supple, guiding the fruit to a clean finish on the palate.
While it's a terrific short-term cellar candidate, it's super-accessible right out of the gate, making it a delightful companion for casual meals and dinner parties. Classic Bordeaux pairings like roasted meats or hearty stews work beautifully; however, step out of the box and try it with something a little wild and crazy — perhaps smokey grilled salmon, spicy cuisine, pasta with a rich meat sauce, or even a flavorful seasoned vegetarian dish. The ripe fruit, smooth tannins, and clean finish complement traditional and non-traditional flavors, making it a great addition to any table.
