If you've been to any of our recent Open House Tastings, you've likely had the pleasure of meeting our good friend Andy Woolgar. Andy is a true champion of South African wines and specializes in sourcing top-quality wines from small, independent producers. Andy's selections are truly local-global -- they cut out the middleman, delivering the best wine at the best price straight from the vineyard, to Andy, to the AWM, and to your glass.
De Kleine Wijn Koöp is a family-run winery in Paarl, managed by the husband and wife team of Wynand Grobler and Anya. Wynand is the winemaker and takes a hands-on approach to the winemaking process, preferring to be personally involved rather than relying on a large team of cellar workers.
De Kleine Wijn Koöp focuses on producing small quantities of high-quality wine, using grapes sourced from prestigious vineyards across the Western Cape, including Stellenbosch, Swartland, Walker Bay Franschhoek, Piekenierskloof, and Agter-Paarl.
Wynand's passion for winemaking is evident in every bottle produced at De Kleine Wijn Koöp. While the business is referred to as a cooperative, the Groblers see it as a small, family-run operation. They work out of a modest cellar and rely on a small, dedicated team to help them manage the business.
This tasting note from our friend Andy very nicely sums up this terrific Cab:
Red cherries, blackberries with currants, and cassis are supported by a fresh, vibrant nose of (very Bordeaux-like) lead pencil shavings which complement the overall complexity. The palate shows dark red, ripe fruit balanced by round, structured, and fine tannins — a lingering, balanced, fresh finish lined with good acidity and an underlying elegance.
Pair this delicious Cabernet Sauvignon with your favorite grilled meats, chops, and stews. All of your go-to Bordeaux pairings will work like a charm with this Cab.
