Domaine des Homs is nestled between the ancient Roman city of Narbonne and the historic Cathar stronghold of Carcassonne. The Domaine is a benchmark producer of classic Languedoc reds, and their picturesque estate extends over 22 hectares on a plateau deep in the heart of the Minervois AOC.
The name "Homs" pays homage to an ancient row of oak trees, or "Ormes," that used to mark the path to the Domaine. The Domaine, founded in 1865, is currently owned and managed by Jean-Marc and Anne De Crozals, descendants of Paul de Crozals, the estate's original owner.
This panoramic plateau of the property sits just 300 meters above sea level and is favored by a unique microclimate. Within Minervois, Domaine des Homs lies in the "Terrasses" microclimate, a temperate zone that happily avoids the region's daytime climate extremes and features cool, breezy evenings.
The plateau is further enhanced by the natural air conditioning provided by the persistent local winds, including the moist Marin from the east and the dry Cers winds from the northwest. The final piece of the terroir puzzle is thanks to the Domaine's diverse soil structure, rich in Villafranchian-origin pebbles and leached clays, dating back to the Quaternary period.
In 2006, the de Crozal family began a transition to organic farming, and by 2009, they had earned their certification. A deep respect for nature and tradition is the foundational philosophy of Domaine des Homs. They completely avoid synthetic weedkillers and chemical fertilizers -- only organic components are added to nurture the soil.
In your glass, this classic Southern French blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah opens with complex notes of dark red and black fruits. Just the right amount of earthy leather and spice balance the plush fruit, finishing with a harmonious balance of lifted acidity and smooth tannins.
Clots de Pals is a rich, full-bodied red that will perfectly accompany all the hearty dishes of the cooler weather to come. We particularly love the Clots de Pas with classic Cassoulet, roasted and braised meats, and of course, any meats from the grill.
