La Mancha is the largest wine-producing territory in Spain, and it's hard to beat this region when it comes to amazingly favorable price-quality ratios. Somms and wine critics have long ignored this immense plateau's desolate, dry landscape, and the winepress has only recently paid more than passing attention. Fortunately, that's all changed, and these days, we see a steady stream of wines from La Mancha making it to the glasses of wine lovers here in the States.

The Bodegas La Remediadora Cooperative was established in 1946 in the town of La Roda, located southeast of Castilla La Mancha. The co-op has grown its vineyard holdings to more than 1700 hectares from its modest beginnings and continues to add more each year.

The co-op's original focus was primarily on Tempranillo and Airén; however, thanks to increased international interest in the other indigenous grapes of the region, they now produce Syrah, Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Bobal, Airén, Macabeo, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, and Moscatel.

In your glass, this bright and fresh Macabeo is redolent of yellow fruits and has lovely tropical notes on the nose. The palate presents a fine balance of fruit and acidity, making this a top choice for picnic and patio.

La Villa Real Macabeo

La Villa Real Macabeo comes from one of Spain's most versatile off-the-radar white grapes, Macabeo. Usually overshadowed by more famous siblings like Albariño and Verdejo, Macabeo quietly shines in vineyards throughout northern and eastern Spain. At La Villa Real, this grape has become a staple. It's appreciated here for its knack of producing crisp, clean whites that express freshness and subtle complexity despite the region's hot and dusty climate. It's a textbook example of what Macebo can do when thoughtfully grown.

In your glass, Villa Real Macabeo opens with refreshing aromas of ripe pear, green apple, and a gentle whisper of lemon zest. Across the middle palate, it's crisp and nicely textured, with just enough bright lift to keep each sip lively. Gentle minerality winds through the finish like a cool summer stream, steering over smooth stones.

We love this Macabeo with all the seafood classics; it pairs especially well with grilled shrimp or a platter of crispy-fried calamari. While it's great with the classics, don't hesitate to venture beyond typical culinary boundaries. Try it alongside a Thai green curry or fresh Vietnamese summer rolls—there's plenty of brightness to complement and contrast the vibrant flavors. For a Tex-Mex option, enjoy it with mildly spiced chicken tacos topped with mango salsa.

Villa Real Tempranillo Syrah

This terrific best-buy red blends Spain's iconic Tempranillo with Syrah, one of the world's most popular vinous blending partners. Tempranillo brings hallmark elegance and subtle earthiness, perfectly anchoring the wine with a traditional Spanish vibe. Syrah brings a bit of boldness and spice, adding layers of richness without overpowering the distinctive Tempranillo style.

In your glass, this Tempranillo Syrah offers aromas of ripe blackberry and dark cherries framed by subtle notes of black pepper and hints of smoky herbs. It's smooth and medium-bodied, striking a great balance between juicy fruit flavors and super-gentle, velvety tannins. Pleasant whispers of earth and spice linger nicely ensuring a grownup finish to the juicy fruit.

This easy-going red will pair like a champ with all of your favorite Spanish dishes fare. For classics, think roasted lamb, practically anything with chorizo, or chicken paella featuring smoky paprika and rich sausage. Moving outside of traditional boundaries, it works wonderfully with spicy Korean barbecue or even Moroccan-spiced vegetable tagine. It'll also fit right in on casual burger night. If it's veggie burger night, try it with a grilled portobello mushroom burger topped with smoked Gouda—showing off the wine's versatility and modern appeal.

Insider Note:

You may remember this wine from a few years back, even though it's gone through a couple of label changes. Before our friend Robert joined us to work for a few years here at the shop, he ran his own importing company. This lovely Macabeo and Tempranillo Syrah were two of the wines I bought from Robert, and we featured it at numerous tastings. It's great to have it back!
