The Rhône Valley in France may be home to some of the world's favorite red blends; however, it's also the source of some excellent white wine blends. Although somewhat off the radar for many wine lovers, white Rhône blends are known for their full-bodied, rich palate of complex flavors. A typical white Rhône blend is most often composed of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier, with varying degrees of percentage, depending on the specific appellation. Marsanne, Viognier, and Roussanne are the main players in the Northern and Southern Rhône; however, in the Southern Rhône, you'll find a broader range of grapes, including Bourboulenc, Clairette, Picpoul, and Ugni Blanc.
Mas des Bressades Tradition Blanc is a gorgeous, lush blend made from 50% Roussanne, 30% Grenache, and 10% each of Marsanne and Viognier. It's produced in one of the hottest regions of the Rhône Valley, where the sun shines for nearly 3000 hours yearly. The region's punishing summer heat is only moderated by the cool breezes of the Petite Camargue, the river delta where the Rhône River meets the Mediterranean.
This full-bodied, dry, and crisp wine has complex layers of aromas and flavors, opening with nuances of white flowers, lemon curd, tropical fruit, honey, and stone fruit. At 17.99, it's an incredible bargain, and at the insider price of $14.99, it's an unbeatable deal!
Serve chilled alongside grilled chicken, white meats, grilled fish, or shellfish.
Insider tip: this is the white counterpart of the red Rhône blend I introduced last week, and the pair will shine at your next gathering or dinner party! Scroll down to the Mas Bressade Tradition Rouge to read more about this venerable estate.
