Barbera d'Asti is one of the most notable wines from the Piedmont region of north-western Italy. It varies significantly in expression and ranges from inky and structured to light and bright. The 2016 Barbera from Povero falls directly in the middle of the range, providing pleasure for any fan of wines from Italy's Piedmont region. In the glass, this medium-bodied red exudes earthy notes of red berries, dark cherry, and spice. The velvety palate features a lengthy melange of red fruits, raspberry, and just a hint of red licorice.

With summer firmly faded into fall, we're keeping a keen eye out for red wines that are a touch brighter in the structure and extraction department, while still remaining rich and satisfying. I was especially excited to find this lush yet lifted Barbera. Enjoy this one with lighter fare while on the porch, by the pool, or even at the beach.

Food pairing? Consider this the Swiss Army Knife of the red wine world. It can hang with a steak, will shine with burgers and grilled chicken, and would even work with heavier fish dishes. If you're looking to try a beautifully crafted small family production red for the warmer months, don't miss this one!

Insider hint: We also stock an awesome Dolcetto from this same producer!
