Few wines are as closely associated with their country of origin as Sauvignon Blanc is with New Zealand. Villa Maria has been one of our most requested New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs through the years, and I have to say, the 2020 release is outstanding!
Villa Maria was founded in 1961 by the current owner and managing director, George Fistonich. Despite the winery's large production volume, it continues today as a privately owned and operated estate.
The estate sources grapes from New Zealand's prime grape-growing regions, including Marlborough, Hawkes Bay, and Gisborne, producing wine in two state-of-the-art facilities located in Marlborough and Auckland. Cool fact -- Villa Maria was the first major wine company in New Zealand to finish their wines with screwcaps, ensuring their wine reaches your glass just as the winemaker intended.
When we profile New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc for the shop, we're always looking for balance, and the 2020 Villa Maria has balance in spades! There's nothing out of place here, and the terrific balance of fruit and brightness provides zippy richness sip after sip.
